Installing an Aftermarket steering wheel with functional horn
sa

Tools you will need

1. 3/4" or 19mm socket (deep well)
2. Wire cutter / stripper / crimper
3. 16 gauge wire connector
4. drill bit / screw
5. 16 Gauge circle connector
6. Phillips head screw driver
7. Allen head screws
8. Allen head wrench
9. Flat head screw driver

To begin with.. congratulations on your new steering wheel. When you bought your steering wheel, it should have came with the following items that you will need. You will also need allen head screws and wrench, but it should come with your hub adapter kit. For this installation, I used a BOSS Hub adapter. Other hub adapters should be similar. The whole steering wheel assembly was installed on a 1991 Acura Integra GS, which had cruise control.. not sure if it will be the same on other integras, but it should be similar.

Also should come with horn holder plate...

Once you've gathered all of your items, start off by removing your old steering wheel. To do this, there are 3 phillips head screws on the back side of the steering wheel, you have to remove all 3 to remove the horn and expose the locking nut on the spline of your steering column.

I've already removed the steering wheel, but heres where all the screws are to make it easier for you to find. The easiest way to remove them is to put your ignition key in and rotate the steering wheel and remove one at a time. Easiest access point is at the top of the steering wheel near the cluster.

Once you have the three phillips head screws out, remove the horn by pulling it forward and disconnecting the blue/red wire from the horn.

Grab your 3/4" or 19mm socket and remove the center screw. Make sure your steering wheel stays straight or you will risk your aftermarket steering wheel to be off center when you install it!

Now remove the top panel of your steering column. To do this you need to remove the circle clip that wraps around the inside of the steering column. I used a flat head screw driver to pop it off. After you get that off, then pop the top panel off. I am calling the thing with the 3 rings on it the "ring thing" because i don't know the actual name.. so if I say "ring thing" that is what i'm referring to.

Now this might differ from other acuras, but mine had a center ring thing that made it a hell of a lot easier for me to install my steering wheel as you can see in the picture above. It connects to a harness that you need to modify. Now the center ring is the ring that you need to have your horn wire to connect to. You will have to do a bit of modification to the ring connectors. First, find the plug and disconnect it from the car harness.

The blue / red wire is the horn. The other 2 wires were for my cruise control (n/a anymore). Disconnect the "ring thing" from the column and disconnect the harness. now its time to do a little modification. So warm up your solder gun....

As you can see, I've already disconnected the 1st and 3rd connection. You need to take your solder gun and melt the solder of all 3. (the 2nd is in the center, but i dont have a picture of before) You will need to resolder ONLY the blue/red wire to the center pin. Once you get that done, then the center ring will now be the power ring. the other 2 are not needed now, so make sure you put shrink tape or electrical tape or something over the wires so they dont short anything out.

after you get that connected, then place the your ring that came with the hub kit on the 2nd ring of the "ring thing"

Now you have to pull your hub adapter out and do a little modification. Now the way that the horn button for hub adapter is "supposed" to work is the one pin is your power, and the arm sticking out the side is "supposed" to be the ground. I've realized since this is my 2nd aftermarket steering wheel, the center horn buttons I've boughten are extremely cheap and dont work well, so I have to modify a ground for the horn button.

The way i did this, is I connected a piece of 16 gauge wiring and wrapped it in a knot around the arm and then I drilled a hole in the side of the hub adapter, then I ran the wire inside of the hub adapter and crimped a circle connector to the other side of the wire and then connected the wire to the hub adapter with a screw. This acts as a true ground for the horn button.

After you have this connected, then place the hub onto your spline of the steering column.

Tighten the center nut down making sure that the hub TOP hole is straight. This is why it was vital that you didnt spin your steering wheel when removing it. Make sure its straight!

Now grab your steering wheel, place the button in the steering wheel and connect your wiring up to the hub. I used a 16 Gauge blue connector to connect my gound. Push the steering wheel against the hub and then put your outer horn holder plate over the horn button and start threading your allen head screws into the hub adapter. Make sure your horn button is straight too.. this can get aggrivating, but take your time and do it right once!

And thats it. Press the button and you will notice your horn works. SAWEET!
